Discover Doct'Sénégal
Doct’SENEGAL is a non-profit association created in 2015 in Lyon (France). Its ambition is to bring together all Senegalese doctoral students and doctors who reside in Senegal and in the diaspora and who work in various fields (education, health, environment, science & technology…).
The goal is to work on projects that can strongly impact the development of Senegal
Our motto is Research at the Service of development of Senegal.
Business areas
Most countries in Africa today face several public health problems. Good health requires a satisfactory balance between physical, mental and social well-being. In Senegal, the constraints linked to health in urban areas and countryside, show that this balance is far from being achieved. With a disproportionate number of health workers living in urban areas, rural areas are very vulnerable.
The difficulty of accessing drinking water in remote areas makes hygiene conditions alarming, thus increasing the likelihood of certain epidemics (e.g. cholera, malaria, chikungunya, bilharziasis, filariasis, trypanosomiasis). The combination of all these factors negatively impacts the life expectancy of the population.
Senegal also has the distinction of having one of the lowest AIDS prevalence rates in Africa (0.9%). In addition, significant progress in the health field was noted, which was illustrated by the satisfactory fight against the Ebola epidemic.
To help out with these issues, Doct’SENEGAL has set these main objectives:
- The organization of awareness campaigns (forums, advertising, …)
The goal will be to inform the population about the potential risks linked to their environment and the dangers associated with the use of certain food / cosmetic products. These series of campaigns will be done with the use of local languages and cultures, in order to successfully transmit good practices to preserve one’s health.
- Identifying recurring needs
It is urgent to identify these needs in terms of screening, care and transport of patients, and to propose innovative alternatives which take account of significant local disparities (doctor, means, etc.).
- The interface of traditional medicine with modern medicine
It is about developing a space for exchange between specialists. This is of crucial importance for optimizing the treatment of diseases. This collaboration between modern and traditional medicine would first pass through a standardization of the types of treatments made by traditional medicine. Thus it will give the possibility of including in our drug stores products of traditional medicine still widely used in Senegal. It would also go through research in particular on the study or characterization of the products commonly used by the two types of medicine.
- Raising awareness of the dangers due to pollution, unsanitary conditions and deforestation
Pollution is a problematic situation that disturbs deeply our ecosystem. Always looking for a more comfortable life, people, through their daily activities and without any remorse, threaten its balance even more. The significant increase in sources of pollution combined with poor waste management is participating in the growth of unsanitary conditions in most regions. We should also mention deforestation, which is a main threat to our environment. All this does not seem to disturb many of senegalese that became used to use to such a setting. It is high time to take measures and teach people to respect the environment, because preserving the biodiversity and the balance of our ecosystem is a duty for each citizen.
- Find solutions to eliminate or recover non-biodegradable waste
The population generates daily waste in most of its activities. It is essential to better control it by identifying each type of waste and knowing how dangerous it is for the population and the environment. Poor management of non-biodegradable waste is a main threat to the balance of flora and fauna. Therefore, there is an urgent need to proceed with a policy aimed at their handling, safe disposal and removal.
- Respect the environment by promoting sustainable agriculture practices
Agriculture is an essential booster in the socio-economic activities of a country. It is a path for food self-sufficiency and generate job creation if we consider all the processing chains of an agricultural product. However, the misuse of certain chemicals to boost productivity or increase yield can quickly become problematic. It is for this reason that promoting better supervised and more eco-friendly practices need to be a cornerstone in our strategy of respect of the environment.
- Set up sustainable development projects favorable to environmental protection
Agricultural entrepreneurship constitutes a major force for socio-economic development and a booster for the effervescence of technical solutions which make it possible to respond to several technological obstacles linked to our environment. These solutions play a crucial role in the implementation of responsible agriculture which takes into account the requirements of sustainable development and respect for the environment. The mobilization of intellectual effort and the provision of material resources are key elements for achieving the expected results.
- To constitute driving force to strengthen the education system
Our mission is to suggest innovative concepts and methods to promote quality education in different sectors. The main objective is to integrate into our current educational system, aspects allowing learners to strengthen their creativity in order to define their professional project as soon as possible. In order to develop, a country needs intellectual support with diverse and varied skills, specialties and levels of study.
The main concepts will focus on helping learners to identify their strengths and weaknesses early on and to work to develop the process that will allow them to achieve their main goal. These innovative systems will have the strength to integrate different aspects, well-adapted, tinged with ethics and morals in order to facilitate their professional integration or to embark on entrepreneurship
- To facilitate those who want to do a PhDn the access to the necessary information and to support them in their choices.
Access to the right information in a shortest possible time is very important for achieving a professional project. Laboratories staff are often well-informed, in advance, about thesis offers before they are published. PhDs and PhD-students constitute a strong asset for professional networking because of their proximity to these opportunities. Their contribution can provide real added value for students actively seeking thesis offers or innovative research projects. Also, practical advices will help PhD-students to define precisely their action plans for their thesis.
Doct’SENEGAL’s mission is to make a major contribution to the support and guidance of pupils and students.
- Promote girls’ education
In Senegal, girls still need support to overcome the many obstacles in their education. This is of paramount importance for a nation that wants to develop, and that is thinking of involving a large part of its population in strategic socio-economic development projects. Indeed, the girls’s experiences, the skills they have, and their professionalism would be a great help in major decision-making bodies.
Success of children is by the mother’s impacted education experience. With an overwhelming majority of girls being educated, we can expect a very promising future.
Research for development is the motto of Doct’SENEGAL. Indeed, research and its application in economic activities constitute for countries like Senegal an essential force of growth for its technological influence. It gives possibility to propose new solutions to meet the many challenges linked to the emergence of the country.
For example, in the agricultural domain, studies on new types of seeds better suited to our climatic and marketable conditions would make it possible to revitalize our agriculture. It means that developing new chains of transformation and valorization of our local products are needed. This would generate new activities that allow more competitiveness on the international market. The combination of basic research and applied research will make major innovations in the priority sectors possible.
To provide elements of answers to these fundamental questions, Doct’SENEGAL is planning to:
- Include inside his organization a space for collective reflection on the promotion of research and training through research in Senegal,
- Contribute considerably in the identification of priority research areas for Senegal,
- Write and share contributions by theme (agriculture, education, economy, science and technology, renewable energy, etc.) which aim to bring out new axis of reflection
- Bring together doctoral students and doctors, by sectors, in order to promote exchanges, facilitate scientific production, publications, etc.
Organize symposium, seminars, thematic days to promote exchanges between researchers on development topics in Senegal.
- Post jobs offer for PhD and postdoc programs
This involves sharing information relating to the professional integration of students seeking thesis subjects, doctoral students and doctors seeking employment.
The fact of evolving in a research environment, implies a proximity of the members of Doct’SENEGAL to the bodies of diffusion of job offers (subject of thesis, post-doctoral contract, position of teacher-researcher, research engineer, etc.). This is a real opportunity to get a head start on accessing this information. The dissemination of these within the Doct’SENEGAL network is a real gateway to access announcements relating to a researcher position at the appropriate time. Job offers in companies will also be shared for doctors wishing to continue their careers in the industrial environment.
- Promote projects favorable to job creation for young graduates
The employment of young graduates can be facilitated by setting up structures of national or even international scope (project and / or business incubators), or through individual actions motivated by the desire to undertake and create employment. Doct’SENEGAL proposes to carry out concrete actions in this direction by promoting job creation for young graduates. As such, one of the objectives would be to encourage job creation through projects coming from collective or individual initiatives within the structure itself.
- Be a source of inspiration and innovation for traditional trades
Being the showcase for research among Senegalese nationals, Doct’SENEGAL aims to encourage structural and strategic innovation, and to inspire people in traditional trades. This would not only allow for fruitful interaction with these networks, which include unsuspected and undervalued skills, but also contribute to job creation indirectly.
- Raising awareness to promote responsible citizens
Responsible citizens are the basis of a working society. They also contribute, directly or indirectly, to an improvement in the lifestyle of the latter.
Doct’SENEGAL is hoping to awaken, nourish and revitalize the feeling of patriotism in each of our compatriots. The preservation of the collective interest constitutes a gigantic project in Senegalese society. Doct’SENEGAL intends to set up, on a regular basis, important awareness programs in order to inform populations about the importance of respecting public goods.
- Technological monitoring and technology transfer to help improve research in Senegal
Technology watch or scientific and technical watch strongly contributes to improve research in universities, laboratories and companies. It consists of mobilizing and monitoring the technological environment in order to define the most promising lines of research. Technology watch and technology transfer will encourage the collection, analysis, synthesis and dissemination of scientific information likely to serve national industries and research centers. They contribute considerably to the promotion of scientific discoveries.
- Promote the development of science and technology
Today, more than ever, science and its applications are essential to the development of a country like Senegal. Developing countries need science and technology-based poverty reduction processes. This will also allow many regions to access appropriate technologies as well as more modern management methods. To do this, it is necessary to increase investment in science and technology. That will lead to a better knowledge and protection of natural resources, biodiversity and the balance of our ecosystem.
- Propose projects, models, research results to our country, to our companies in order to set up structures of advice and strategic orientation
In Senegal, the population is facing an employment crisis affecting mainly women, the young and the most highly educated. The private sector offers few job opportunities, and SMEs / SMIs have difficulty accessing finance due to the high levels of bank guarantees required. Added to that, Senegal lacks structures of advice and strategic orientation for guaranteeing an improvement in the economic and social standard of living. In fact, proposing suitable projects, models and research results will help to lay the groundwork for controlled and sustainable development dynamism
- Identify the problems and propose solutions or guidelines (expertise) on major and urgent problems in Senegal
Despite the progress in economic growth observed in recent years, Senegal is one of the least developed developing countries. This delay is linked to several factors including the energy deficit, which is one of the major problems of Senegal. It undoubtedly slows down the economic and social development of Senegal. The same is true for internet access, which is mainly available in major cities. Identifying these major problems will make possible to set up an appropriate action plan in order to offer tailor-made solutions and orientations.
